Equilibrium Eccentricity of Accreting Binaries

Using high-resolution hydrodynamics simulations, we show that equal-mass binaries accreting from a circumbinary disk evolve toward an orbital eccentricity of $e \simeq 0.45$, unless they are initialized on nearly circular orbit with \lesssim 0.08$, in which case further circularize. The implied bi-modal distribution resembles seen post-AGB stellar binaries. Large accretion spikes around periapse impart tell-tale, quasi-periodic, bursty signature the light curves eccentric We predict intermediate-mass and massive black hole at $z 10$ entering \emph{LISA} band will have measurable eccentricities range 10^{-3} - 10^{-2}$, if experienced gas-driven phase. On other hand, GW190521 would entered LIGO/Virgo undetectable $\sim 10^{-6}$ it had been driven into gravitational wave regime by gas disk.
